The Asian water monitor (Varanus salvator) is one of the largest monitor lizards in the world, capable of reaching lengths of 6-7 feet. These impressive reptiles require specialized care and large enclosures.
Adult Asian water monitors need an enclosure at least 8'x4'x4', with larger being better. They require both land and water areas, with the water portion being large enough for full submersion.
Maintain a basking spot of 120-130°F with ambient temperatures of 85-90°F on the warm side and 75-80°F on the cool side. UVB lighting is essential for proper calcium metabolism.
Back to TopThe ackie monitor (Varanus acanthurus), also known as the spiny-tailed monitor, is a smaller species perfect for beginners interested in monitor lizards.
A 4'x2'x2' enclosure is suitable for an adult ackie. They require deep substrate (12+ inches) for burrowing, multiple hiding spots, and proper climbing opportunities.
Ackies are insectivores, thriving on a diet of crickets, roaches, mealworms, and other insects. Adults should be fed 3-4 times per week, while juveniles need daily feedings.
Back to TopThe green tree monitor (Varanus prasinus) is an arboreal species known for its vibrant green coloration and slender body built for life in the trees.
These monitors need tall enclosures (at least 4' tall) with plenty of branches, vines, and foliage for climbing and hiding. Maintain high humidity levels of 70-80%.
Green tree monitors are more sensitive than other monitors and require stable environmental conditions. They're best suited for intermediate to advanced keepers.
Back to TopThe Timor monitor (Varanus timorensis) is a smaller, semi-arboreal species that makes an excellent pet for those interested in monitors but with limited space.
A 4'x2'x3' enclosure works well for an adult. Provide both ground space and climbing opportunities. Temperature gradient should range from 75°F to 100°F basking spot.
Timor monitors can be shy but often tame down well with regular, gentle handling. They're intelligent and can become quite personable with proper care and socialization.
